When I was 15, I was finishing up my sophomore year and my dad told me about a job opening for a private country club near my house. I was turning 16 in a few weeks and knew I was going to have to start paying for gas, so the money factor was appealing. I’ll admit, I also wanted to turn the second High School Musical movie (where they worked poolside and sang while washing dirty dishes) into my reality. So, I went in for an interview, got hired on the spot, and worked my first shift on Easter only days after my sweet sixteen.
When I was 16, I was working every Thursday-Sunday of my summer at the club as either a front -runner/hostess, a Sunday brunch waitress or a special event server. I enjoyed going to work with my friends and I was making pretty great money for a first job. One night I was carrying a water pitcher through our dining room when my boss pulled me aside to introduce me to the new back runner named Ryan. I smiled and continued on filling up fancy cups for fancy people with no clue in my mind that the new boy would eventually become ‘the’ boy.
When I was 17, I was unbelievable busy with school. homework, work and attempts at a social life. Junior year was packed full with fun moments and stressful days, and through it all, I became increasingly more excited to go to work to see Ryan. I would anxiously check the schedule to see if he and I would be working together that week and be disappointed when the days didn't line up. I even became a kitchen staff ‘favorite’, because I would offer to polish dishes or run food just to talk and laugh with him more.
We became friends and work was the best… until Ryan left the country club for a better job. I didn’t realize how much I liked him or thought about him until he wasn’t around. We lost touch for a couple of months until we began texting all day every day and he finally asked me on a date for a walk in the park. As cliche as it sounds, the rest was history and we never looked back.
Now that I am 18, I can look back on the last three years of my life and I can see the millions of little moments that led me to sitting in my college dorm writing about my best friend and love of my life. We have been together for a year and four months, and I can genuinely say I have never been more confident in myself and more excited for my future! Ryan has the biggest heart, bluest eyes, and the most contagious charm that you can’t help but smile at. He is supportive in all of my adventures and helpful in all of my struggles. I could go on for days - literally - about how amazing he is, but to sum it up, I am in love with a goofy gentleman who would go to the ends of the earth to make me happy.
